Arctic Ambassador Center Network Toolkit

Celebrating 20 years!

The week of June 24th will serve as the kickoff to the 20-year anniversary of the Arctic Ambassador Center Network, founded by Polar Bears International in 2004. As part of our celebration, we plan to showcase the role of zoos and aquariums in polar bear conservation, and the ways our collaborations have made a real impact on wild polar bears and inspired our communities to act.

As a valued member of our network, we created this toolkit for you, providing content that you can plug into your outreach and communications plans as you see fit throughout the year. Arctic Sea Ice Day and Polar Bear Week, for example, could be great touchpoints!

Why Does it Matter?

PBI’s Arctic Ambassador Center Network includes 49 zoos, aquariums, and wildlife parks that share our commitment to polar bear conservation. Network members participate in research, education, and action programs that address the key challenges polar bears face in a warming Arctic.

We are so proud of the collective action of our AAC Network! By meaningfully and intentionally engaging in this partnership and building capacity for staff in different departments to draw on their strengths and work as a team, you are contributing to these conservation wins:

  • Maximizing participation in conservation science

  • Continually working to gain a greater understanding of the well-being of the polar bears in human care by advancing animal welfare science

  • Helping to direct policy and participating in advocacy efforts

  • Building collaborative partnerships and public outreach

So, whether you are conducting education and outreach programs or sharing on social media as part of Save Our Sea Ice awareness events, participating in Polar Bear Research Council (PBRC) prioritized research programs, working with the PBI Climate Alliance, or funding important research in the field . . . let’s celebrate your contributions to the Network!

Special Thanks

Join us in thanking Frontiers North’s Adventures (FNA) for their commitment to building capacity for the Arctic Ambassador Center Network and Polar Bears International’s programming since the beginning!  We know that their support makes a measurable difference on how people all over the world better understand and conserve polar bears.

Their team has invested in hundreds of zoo staff and local youth by helping to host the Climate Alliance and Field Ambassador programs in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Frontiers North Adventures’ tours are accompanied by a Polar Bears International Field Ambassador each season — a program solely offered to  animal care staff within the AAC Network as well as early career scientists.

Tundra Buggy® One is donated by Frontiers North Adventures for Polar Bears International’s outreach, serving as our mobile broadcast studio. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people, including classrooms from pre-K to university level, members of our AAC Network, and the public view our Tundra Connections® webcasts, broadcast live from Buggy One. In addition, millions of people tune into our live Polar Bear Cams, including the cam streamed from Tundra Buggy® One.

It’s important to Frontiers North Adventures to support our field level programming — and important the AAC Network supports them as well. After all, Polar Bears International was born on a Tundra Buggy® 😊

*Please let us know how we can help get your team (and community) scheduled for a once in a lifetime opportunity to see polar bears in the wild with Frontiers North Adventures!
