U.S. Designates Critical Polar Bear Habitat

Two polar bearsHere's another step in the right direction for polar bears: the U.S. Fish and Wildife Service has designated 187,000 square miles in Alaska as critical habitat for the species. The designation identifies geographic areas containing features considered essential for the conservation of the polar bear that require special management or protection, including both onshore and offshore areas. Polar bears are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
