The Power of Volunteers

AAZK Conference Volunteers

Fired up and already inspiring change in their communities. That was our reaction to the hard-working volunteers who recently pitched in to help us at two events central to motivating action on climate change: the American Zoo Keepers Association (AAZK) Conference in San Diego and the Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents (AZAD) Conference in Memphis.

During the AAZK conference, past PBI-AAZK Leadership Camp participants shared the inspiration and knowledge they gained at camp by conducting a powerful four-hour workshop on climate science and polar bears. The session included information on:

  • Ways to reach the public
  • The most critical behaviors needed to save polar bears
  • And—most important of all—how to effect change in their communities

What Else Did Volunteers Do?

Shane Good and Marissa Krouse

  • At the AAZK conference, they organized a tree-planting carbon-offset option for conference participants, raising enough money to plant a tree for everyone in attendance
  • They also helped staff our exhibit booth at both conferences, helping others learn about the resources available through PBI—and inspiring them to get involved

Join us in a huge bear hug of gratitude to each of the volunteers listed below—not only for their help at the conferences, but for their leadership in reducing CO2 in their home towns.
