The Greening of Healthcare
Did you know that the healthcare industry is second only to fast food in carbon emissions? That's about to change if teenager Emily Goldstein, one of our Project Polar Bear contest grand prize winners, has her way. This amazing young woman organized a Greening of Healthcare conference in Louisville, Kentucky, with Jeff Corwin of the Animal Planet as the keynote speaker.
Here's her description of the event:
Our Greening of Healthcare conference was a huge success! We had speakers from all over the country speak to almost 300 registrants. A lot of people left fired up to make their hospitals and offices greener.
When I was working on Project Polar Bear, I read the statistic that the healthcare industry is second only to fast food in emitting CO2, and that's what made me approach hospitals here in Louisville about changing their energy usage. This led to a strong, ongoing relationship with our biggest hospital entity, Norton Healthcare.
We're so happy with the outcome of the conference. Jeff Corwin of the Animal Planet was awesome as the keynote speaker, citing the relationship between a healthy planet and our own health. And I got to introduce him!
We spent a lot of time together afterward, and talked a lot about polar bears. He loves Dr. Steve Amstrup [PBI's senior scientist] and knows a lot about PBI.
We're already planning next year's event, with ideas to make it even bigger!
