Progress in Cancun
The Climate Change talks in Cancun were a step in the right direction, thanks in large part to the Mexican government's inclusive, flexible, and open approach. Nearly all of the representatives from 194 nations in attendance burst into applause at the agreement, which gives action on climate change a chance.
Although the agreement falls short of what is needed, the talks show that nations can come together on this issue. The countries agreed to:
- Deep cuts in emissions
- Formalized reduction targets for developing and industrialized nations
- The establishment of a Green Climate Fund to help impoverished countries address global warming
