Massive Iceberg Breaks off in Greenland

A giant island of ice more than four times larger than Manhattan broke off from Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland. It's now drifting across the Arctic Ocean, where it may threaten oil platforms and shipping lanes. The iceberg is the largest in half a century and is the second chunk to break off the Petermann Glacier in two years.

The break comes during a period of worrisome warming in the Arctic and a summer of record heat waves, wildfires, and smog in Russia and floods in Asia.
