Inuit Group Wins Fight to Block Arctic Oil and Gas Testing
A Canadian judge has ruled in favor of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, which launched a legal challenge to Canada's plans for oil and gas testing in a proposed arctic national marine park. Local communities expressed concerns that sound waves from seismic testing could disturb area wildlife, including polar bears, walrus, and whales.
Association president Okalik Eegeesiak stated that, despite assurances, people in the High Arctic communities weren't adequately consulted before the tests were planned. Judge Susan Cooper agreed, citing the potential for "irreparable harm."
