Earth Day and Polar Bears
Keepers at the North Carolina Zoo celebrated Earth Day by creating a polar bear sculpture from 2,000 plastic grocery bags. It took them three months to finish it, but the work of art was a huge hit.
During the Earth Day event, Keepers Marissa Krouse, Sara Monson, Katy Bleakney stationed themselves at the "bag bear" sculpture all day to interact with the public. They handed out reusable bags along with Polar Bears International's mini posters about polar bears, climate change, and how to reduce your carbon footprint. They also helped people make the connection between planting trees to help polar bears and how simple lifestyle changes like shopping with reusable bags help polar bears and the planet.
