Churchill Prepares for Polar Bear Season
The Polar Bear Capital of the World has prepared for a busy bear season by finishing upgrades to its polar bear holding facility. The center is designed to hold polar bears that wander into town until they can be transported northward or Hudson Bay freezes over. The strategy is part of the town's highly successful Polar Bear Alert Program, which protects both polar bears and people.
This year, the bears came off the ice very early—almost all were on shore by July 20th. The good news is that almost all of the bears sighted were in very good condition.
