Polar Bears International Receives Support from RBC Tech for Nature

We are thrilled to announce that Polar Bears International has been chosen as one of RBC’s 2021 Tech for Nature partners. Through the partnership, Polar Bears International will receive $75,000 in funding from the RBC Foundation to help support our efforts to reduce conflict between polar bears and people, a growing problem in a warming Arctic.

“As the sea ice melts, more polar bears are being driven ashore in more places, and for longer periods,” said Krista Wright, Executive Director of Polar Bears International. “This has led to increased conflict with people in coastal Arctic areas. We’re grateful for this funding from the RBC Foundation, which will enable us to expand our conflict-reduction efforts, including work to empower northern communities to live safely with polar bears.”

We plan to focus our first-year efforts on Manitoba, Canada, where we are refining the use of radar technology to detect approaching polar bears, with a goal of developing an “early warning” system for use in northern communities. In addition, we plan to invest in more educational outreach on how to avoid conflict with polar bears while also working to reduce attractants that draw polar bears in the first place.

The most pressing environmental concerns of our time are negatively impacting the planet at a rate that often outpaces the solutions designed to address them. RBC is leveraging its capabilities in technologies as well as its convening power to build solutions and the type of multi-partner coalitions needed to address and solve our shared environmental challenges.

“At RBC, we believe in the power of innovative technologies to address and scale solutions to some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time,” said Valerie Chort, Vice-President, Corporate Citizenship & Sustainability, RBC. “We’re proud to be working alongside Polar Bears International to develop real-world, scalable solutions to tackle the challenges that continue to plague our environment.”

Thanks to the RBC Foundation, we’ll be able to work with partners to continue this important work.
