PBI Kicks off Polar Bear Week with a Gala Celebration

On Saturday, October 29th, Polar Bears International staff and supporters from around Canada gathered in Winnipeg for PBI’s first-ever fundraising event: An Evening with the Polar Bears.

We held the gala at the Assiniboine Park Zoo to celebrate the polar bear—an icon of the Canadian wild. Special guests included Drs. Andrew Derocher, a polar bear scientist with the University of Alberta and a scientific advisor to PBI, and our own Steven Amstrup, polar bear scientist and recipient of the Indianapolis Prize—considered the Nobel Prize of animal conservation.

All proceeds from the event will support polar bear conservation efforts and research projects in Canada, home to two-thirds of the world’s polar bears.

“It was a fabulous evening, with playful polar bears, ice sculptures, a wonderful dinner, generous donors, and fabulous support from the board, staff, and volunteers,” said Krista Wright, PBI’s executive director. “We're grateful for the strong show of support for our efforts.”

As part of the gala, PBI presented its first-ever Ice Bear Award to Bob Williams, former chair of PBI Canada, in recognition of his conservation efforts on behalf of polar bears.

Our heartfelt thanks to our event sponsors for making the night a huge success:
