Well at home, thoughts popped up, I said I would never write a poem, but this is how it sounded in my head, so Bill, here it is:
Our destination was north
To a town in Hudson Bay
16 student and entourage
Arrived in Churchill on a sunny day
There were great expectations
And on that very first night
Many dreams came true
As we were greeted by the northern light
A walk around town
Revealed a amazing little spot
See, the people up here
Are unique, no if or but
Off to the buggy we went
Excitement was in the air
And after only a little while
There he was, our first polar bear
He was sleeping, on the tundra floor
Fluffy, big and surprisingly white
We felt a need to give him a hug
But was assured, it would not be bright
And the students, oh they were smart
Sharper than knives
They knew better
Surely they will change lives
We got settled, each in a bunk
And it would not be soon
After an breathtaking sunset
We also saw a glimpse of the moon
We saw bear upon bear
Sun, snow and heavy rain
But even in the worst of storms
Life on the tundra was never a strain
Every day a bear would walk by
White coat glowing in the sun
And we listened intrigued to tales
Of bears 10 feet tall, weighing a tonne
On good days bears would play
It seemed they put on a show
For all of us to see
Their spirits were never low
Then finally came the snow
Though it did not last long
It gave comfort in a climate debate
And ideas to a song
One day caribous walked by
On a ground no longer white
And Canada geese and eagles
Passing by, hasty in flight
Oh we saw it all
We loved it, it was a blast
But then hit reality
We knew it would not last
Back to home would go
With knowledge and facts in our heads
We will change the world, reverse extinction
And cause no more deaths
Home we would go, that was sure
For everyone it hurt in heart
But we had learned something very important
Nature is just like fine art
We will fight for this cause
Demand our reasons to be meet
Nature is fragile
Do not let anyone forget
Will we meet again?
Little do we know
But it is safe to say
A bit of our hearts was left there, in the snow
