Project Outline

Our Goal:

This spring, a bike/walking trail was added around our park and little league athletic fields. Our initial plan was to start a community garden/flower bed, but with fall arriving we decided it would be best to take on the project next spring. So this fall to get us going we would like to landscape the trail, by planting small trees, brushes, flowers, and bulbs. By doing this we would like to get the community involved, to raise awareness to everyone.
First, we need to make a detailed plan of what we want to accomplish. Then, we will need to go to the city council for approval of our plan. Next, we will raise funds for the supplies we will need (plants, bulbs, etc). If necessary, we can conduct a fundraiser with eco-friendly products at a community event. Then, we will need volunteers to help plant and work on the trail. Finally, we will keep documents of how the project is affecting the community.
We will setup any necessary arrangements for a community garden during the span of this project. Next year we still plan to start a community garden/flower bed. Community members will be able to bring plants to the garden, and once they are done growing they can use them or sell them at the farmers' market. This is a great way to locally spread the word of the impact this could make if people get involved.

Finally, a side project that would be great if we have enough time- we would like to find a way to reduce the trash from fast food restaurants. Especially those locally that still use styrofoam.

Booyahhh! Community Garden-today is a good day

Today we met with Sally Vanderlinden to talk about getting land to start a community garden for next spring.  The Vanderlindens were gracious enough to donate a lot for our community garden (number 4 on the map).  Our next blog will feature pictures of our lot.  Sometime this week we plan to mow and till the section.

We wrote  a petition to put recycling bins in fast food restaurants.  This will reduce waste, because all of the food in the restarants can be wrapped up.  Our petition will give people the option to recycle when eating in.  So far we have about 100 signatures, we plan to continue promoting our cause.

We found land to start our community garden, we are hoping it will be donated to us.  We are also going to contact the DNR for tips and guidence on planting trees and landscaping for the bike trail.  We hope to get our community garden started by next spring.  We will have everything in place beforehand.
