Increase the Green to Suck Up the CO2
Project Outline
Our project goals are to increase the amount of native plants and animal species in community parks and neighborhoods through out our area. While education children on the importance of conservation, we plan to find ways each individual and family can help the environment locally and in their homes. We believe if one starts to act locally, we can all make a positive impact globally.
We started out with discussions of students opinions on global warming. Then we went through mini-lessons on global warming and polar bears. We had question answer times where the students received candy or a Polar Bear poster (with facts about the bears on the back) for correct answers. As a craft/exercise we had the kids trace their hands or feet (after seeing the size of a bear's paw) and write something that they pledge to do to help the environment, animals, or even their own houses. We plan to hang their hand/foot prints on the hallway wall next to the life sized bear foot print picture that we have.
The kids seemed to enjoy the lesson, and we talked with them about possible careers with animals as well.

Tomorrow (11/10/09) Molly and Kaley have planned to have an outreach with the entire Avonworth Middle School's 7th grade, through the 7th grade pre-biology teacher.
The outreach will be focused on Global Warming and how it has been affecting Polar Bear populations.
We then plan to acquire pledges from the students to reduce their carbon emissions. Hopefully we will be able to inspire the students to make smart environmentally conscious choices, and their actions will benefit the Polar Bears and their habitats.
Plant Sale!
So far the girls have purchased 76 small potted seeds that they're selling at their school's open house in September.
The profits will go into covering the cost of purchasing the plants, and any money left over will go into buying more seeds for the team memebers to give away to people who pledge to plant them.
The team is charging $2 for each individual plant.

Our first meeting was held on Wednesday July 8th at 9am at our local high school, to come up with a plan for our Polar Bear PARKtection project.
Rigth now, our team members are working on the first part of our project. We are trying to organize and get ready for the nature camp that we are planning to have.
We are planning to have this camp on Sunday August 2nd from 10am-2pm with space for a maximum of 40 kids.
We also plan to have a second camp day on Sunday August 16th. This will be a very similar day, and will run from the same time.
Our next task is to find organizations willing to donate plants. We will use the profits from our nature camp in order to help with these costs.
Then we will be planting in our local park. We have already recieved permission from our local council to plant native plants in the park in order to increase the green, and the amount of wild life that visits our park. Team member Molly was sent to the local Ben Avon Council meeting, where she explained our cause and was granted permission to continue the project.
