PBI Project Polar Bear Contest

Bright young minds outsmart CO2

From goat-mowing patrols to no idle zones—Project Polar Bear is a way for small groups of young people to make a big difference! Our contest challenges teens to create community projects that reduce carbon emissions. Grand Prize teens win a trip to Churchill to see wild polar bears.

Want to know who won in 2009? In 2008?

Ready, Set, Go!

Check out the dates, rules, themes, and prizes for this year's contest.

  • Muster up a team of two or three teens (ages 14  to 18), plus an adult advisor to guide you (not to do your project for you!)
  • Choose a theme and create your project (follow the link for ideas and inspiration)
  • Register with a participating Arctic Ambassador Center zoo near you—or sign up in the "at large" category

Advice on Reaching the Finish Line

  • Schedule regular team meetings
  • Before you start, figure out a way to measure your project's impact. You could, for example, count the number of trees planted and calculate how much CO2 they absorb. Or you might total up the emissions saved from your Ride Your Bike to School Days. It's your project. What makes the most sense?
  • Publicize your progress with updates to your team's own Project Polar Bear webpage. Take photos. Shoot  a video. Post journal entries. And ... psst ... be sure to record the carbon savings on your page.
  • Finally: complete the Project Polar Bear Success Report on our website. Submit it by the deadline of August 31, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time for the Summer Session and December 31, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time for the Fall Session

Some Inspiration for You
Your ideas can make real changes in people's habits and help motivate us all to protect our earth and its many creatures—especially polar bears. Take a look at what you might do. And then go for it!
