Dr. Steve Amstrup, lead polar bear biologist for the USGS and PBI Research Advisory Council member, must work fast because the immobilizing drug wears off quickly.

Communicators Leadership Camp

In the Fall of 2010, PBI will launch a pilot project: PBI Communicators Leadership Camp for zoo-based educators and PR and marketing staff in association with AZA's Climate Initiative.

Participants will develop a firm understanding of:

  • What’s going on in the field
  • Interpretation strategies and how people learn
  • Climate change and polar bear science
  • How to be a leader and build an effective team
  • Tools that focus on the best ways to share the message
  • How to contribute effectively as an institution and on a personal level
  • Ways to fine-tune planning and execution skills

Slots for our 2010 Camp have already been filled. We selected zoo communicators who are already leading initiatives to make a difference. Campers will:

  • Observe polar bears in their natural setting and experience the tundra
  • Learn how climate disruption affects polar bears and the Arctic
  • Establish and fortify relationships with field scientists, colleagues, and Churchill residents
  • Share ways to inspire people to action—from individuals to entire communities

Before leaving, each participant will develop a goal and action plan for a community-based polar bear conservation project or a project that supports AZA’s Climate Initiative.
