Polar Bears Wake up Beside Oil Rig

A polar bear mother and cub that wintered in a den on a man-made island on Alaska's Arctic Coast emerged in March to find themselves just a few feet away from an active oil drilling site. The site had been constructed while the two were holed up under the snow. Workers for ENI Petroleum reported the pair to the U.S. Fish and Willdife Service and vacated the site until the bears departed for the sea ice.
